the J Singers amateur mixed-voice choir

Join us!

We are always pleased to hear from adult singers of all ages who are interested in joining us.

You do need to have some musical ability, but previous experience in a choir is not required. Although it helps to be able to read music, it is not essential; each section does have the opportunity to practice separately during rehearsals, and recordings can often be made available on request to enable practice at home.

Joining a choir does involve a significant commitment, and consequently we do invite prospective new members to join in with our rehearsals to get to know us first. Then, after a short mutually agreed trial period, a voice test will be discretely arranged with our Director of Music, using music of your choice.

Rehearsals take place near Bridgwater, at the Wembdon Parish Centre, on Tuesday evenings from 7:30pm to 9:30pm. Regular attendance is expected and is essential in the two or three weeks before a performance. There is a £3.00 weekly membership fee (with a concessionary rate for students) and mid-session refreshments are provided. On being accepted as a member a one-off deposit of £10.00 is levied; this is refunded on leaving the choir when sheet music and other items on loan have been returned.

We typically perform at around 10 concerts per year, mainly in the spring, the autumn, and the run-up to Christmas. To project our identity as a group it is usual to dress for performances in a similar manner.

Please do contact us if you would like to learn more, discuss your experience, or to request a membership registration form. You can also download the membership registration form here.

Why choose us?

There are, of course, other choirs that you could join — so why choose us? We’ve put together a few of the reasons why we enjoy singing with the J Singers. If they appeal to you too, why not call us?

  • We enjoy variety. Our repertoire is wide and varied, and this is reflected in our rehearsals, which involve singing a number of varied songs too. Our performances also take place in a wide range of venues.
  • We’ve been told that we are a friendly group. While the singing always comes first, we do enjoy each other’s company and do our best to make new members feel welcome.
  • We’re informal. We take our signing seriously, but we do so in an informal atmosphere.
  • We are directed with a firm but light touch. We count ourselves fortunate to have Elaine Thorneycroft-Gibb as our Director of Music and particularly appreciate her blend of expertise and humour.
